Tumors of the Kidney
Both benign and malignant tumors occur in the kidney. With the exception of
oncocytoma, the benign tumors rarely cause clinical problems. Malignant tumors
on the other hand, are of great importance clinically and deserve considerable
emphasis
BENIGN TUMORS:
Small, discrete adenomas arising from the renal tubular epithelium are found
commonly (7% to 22%) at autopsy.
MALIGNANT TUMORS:
Renal cell carcinomas represent about 3% of all newly diagnosed visceral cancers
in the United States and account for 85% of renal cancers in adults. There are
approximately 30,000 new cases per year and 12,000 deaths from the disease.
Renal cell carcinoma is classified as one of the great mimics in medicine,
because it tends to produce a diversity of systemic symptoms not related to the
kidney
